Exploring the Potential of Drone Technology

ASPRI Demo Day - Mr. Han Meng’s Presentation

At ASPRI Demo Day, Mr. Han Meng from ARIAS shared how drone technology can support safer and more efficient industrial inspection work by reducing the need for people to enter difficult-to-reach or potentially hazardous areas.

Addressing Access Challenges

One of the key challenges in industrial inspection is access. Inspectors may need to assess elevated or difficult-to-reach areas, where traditional inspection methods can require personnel to physically access these locations and increase exposure to working-at-height and other site-related risks.

Mr. Han Meng explained how drones can provide an additional inspection method by creating distance between personnel and difficult inspection locations.

“The drone takes the risk. The human takes the decision.”

This reflects an important principle behind ARIAS’s approach to inspection technology. Drone technology is used to support, rather than replace, experienced inspectors, engineers and site personnel. It can help reduce unnecessary human exposure while enabling technical personnel to gather visual information from locations that may otherwise be difficult to access.

Not Replacing Humans — Upgrading Them

By using technology for suitable data-capture and access tasks, personnel can focus on higher-value responsibilities such as interpreting inspection information, planning appropriate actions, developing maintenance strategies and managing compliance requirements.

ARIAS’s approach goes beyond simply operating a drone. Practical site knowledge, inspection requirements, operational planning and suitable technology need to work together to provide useful information for the people responsible for the asset.

Key Technical Takeaways

• Create distance from risk: Use drones where appropriate to reduce the need for personnel to physically access difficult or potentially hazardous locations.

• Keep human judgement at the centre: Technology captures information, while qualified personnel interpret the findings and make decisions.

• Use technology as an operational tool: Drone inspection can complement existing inspection, maintenance and asset-management processes.

For contractors, plant owners and facility managers, drone technology provides another practical option when planning inspection activities—particularly where access, safety and operational efficiency are important considerations.

ARIAS works with clients to assess where inspection technologies can be practically applied to support safer and more informed inspection planning.
